TickTweet

The original idea came from @styletime for @imjustcreative's new site: SoulTweet. The idea was a WordPress plug-in that will show any tweet from Twitter public time-line where “soultweet” is mentioned. As I long wanted to create a WP plug-in, this was a great chance to do it, so I offered my help. In about 1.5 weeks (I do have other things to do), the TickTweet 0.0.2 is ready for download.

TickTweet 0.0.1 was not so successful, as it was too much on dependant on server setup. I've rewritten the way data is retrieved from Twitter. This version of TickTweet relies heavily on WordPress core, so this time everything should be OK.

I owe a BIG THANK YOU to Graham Smith for his time and patience. Thank you Graham.

Description

A WordPress plug-in for scrolling tweets. This plug-in enables you to tick (scroll) tweets for a particular term that is mentioned on Twitter, or tweets from a Twitter user. Retrieved tweets are cached. Can customize: what to retrieve, how often and how many, the speed of scrolling, the title of the plug-in, the date format, should the scrolling pause on mouse hover, should any links in tweets be converted to regular xHTML links (anchor tags), and enabling/disabling the credits link.

Install

  1. Upload the `ticktweet` folder to `/wp-content/plugins/` directory.
  2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress.
  3. Create a folder called 'cache' and give it 777 permissions.
  4. Call `tickTweet()` where you want it in the template. Enclose that in PHP tags:
    `<?php tickTweet(); ?>`
  5. There are some default settings, but can be changed from the dashboard.

Technical details

Soon I'll write a blog post on the technical details about this plug-in, so feel free to grab the feed to stay tuned.
